Selflessly Selfish

Every action an organism takes is performed to receive a pleasure reward, whether that be itching a scratch, getting out of bed, injecting heroin, or helping an old lady cross the road.

What we tend to call a good person is someone who gets pleasure from performing actions which give pleasure to others. They can in one sense be considered selfish since they’re helping others for their own pleasure, but what separates them from many people is that they care enough about others’ well-being that they are actually able to experience that pleasure when helping others and seeing them prosper. Their selflessness is rewarded.
